Ye Old Virginia Batter Bread


  • 1 cup of cornmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 4 tablespoons of syrup
  • 3 tablespoons of shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups of boiling water
  • 3/4 cup of flour
  • 2 well-beaten eggs
  • 4 level teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 1/4 cups of milk


Place cornmeal, nutmeg, salt, syrup, and shortening in a mixing bowl. Pour over boiling water. Beat to blend thoroughly, then let cool and add flour, eggs, baking powder, and milk. Beat to mix thoroughly, then pour in a well-greased baking dish and bake in a hot oven for thirty minutes. Serve from the dish.
