Black Cake

Ingredients

  • 3 cupfuls of butter
  • 1 quart of sugar
  • 3 pints of flour
  • 1/2 a pint of molasses
  • 1/2 a pint of brandy
  • 1/2 a pint of wine
  • 1 teaspoonful of saleratus
  • 1 ounce each of all kinds of spices
  • 12 eggs
  • 3 pounds of raisins
  • 2 pounds of currants
  • 1/2 a pound of citron

Instructions

Bake in deep pans, in a moderate oven, between three and four hours.

This is one of the best of rich cakes.
