Ingredients

  • 8 pails of water
  • 2 quarts of barley
  • 4 quarts of split peas
  • 1 bushel of potatoes
  • 1/2 bushel of turnips
  • 1/2 bushel of carrots
  • 1/2 peck of onions
  • 1 ounce of pepper
  • 2 pounds of salt
  • 1 ox's head
  • parsley
  • herbs

Instructions

Boiled six hours, produces one hundred and thirty pints. Boil the meat and take off the first scum before the other ingredients are put in.
