Butter-milk Batter Cakes

  • dry stale bread
  • 1 quart of butter-milk
  • 2 eggs
  • butter or lard
  • salt
  • flour
  • 1 tea-spoonful of salaeratus
  • sweet milk

Soak pieces of dry stale bread in the butter-milk, until soft, break in the eggs, add a little butter or lard, and salt and flour enough to make it stick together, beat it well, add the salaeratus, dissolved in warm water; thin it with a little sweet milk, and bake as other batter cakes. They may be prepared in a short time.
