Molasses Cake

  • 2 cupfuls of New Orleans molasses
  • 1 cupful of butter
  • 1 teaspoonful of powdered ginger
  • 1 teaspoonful of cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoonful of cloves
  • 3 well-beaten eggs
  • 3 cupfuls of flour
  • 1 cupful of boiling water
  • 3 teaspoonfuls of baking soda

Put together the molasses and butter, and heat them enough to soften the butter; remove from the fire, and add the powdered ginger and cinnamon, and the cloves, then the eggs. When it is well mixed add alternately, in small quantities, the flour and boiling water in which have been dissolved the baking soda.
