English Gems

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of butter
  • 2 cups of brown sugar
  • 4 beaten eggs
  • 1 teaspoonful of soda
  • 1 large cup of strong coffee
  • 1 cup of molasses
  • 4 cups of sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoonful of nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoonful of allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoonful of cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoonful of mace
  • 2 teaspoonfuls of cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1 cup of raisins
  • 1/2 cup of currants and chopped citron
  • chocolate icing

Instructions

Cream butter with brown sugar.

Add eggs, soda dissolved in coffee, molasses, flour, nutmeg, allspice, cloves and mace, cream of tartar sifted with flour, raisins, currants and chopped citron.

Mix well and fill buttered gem pans 1/2 full and bake until done.

Cover with chocolate icing.
